What does it feel like to be stuck in the American healthcare system? Why do we so often break down inside something fundamentally designed to fix us? Can the system itself be healed?
The Hummm seeks to engage these questions in On Hold. Based on real-life experiences of our collaborators, the show loosely follows a young woman who has just found out shes BRCA positive. As she jumps through hoops to access routine screenings, we weave between realism and surrealism in a fever-dream that tries to make sense of all the what-the-f*ck moments inside our current medical system. MRI machines become portals to outer space, Angelina Jolie answers at the end of a very long, annoying insurance phone menu, and actors are constantly shape-shifting from one character to another.
Our hope is that On Hold provides the beginnings of an antidote. Viewers will walk away having learned a bit more about our current dilemma; this basic understanding of 1) how we got here, 2) why things work the way they do, and 3) what other options exist will hopefully empower people to more effectively navigate this arena. But, even this can be quite a lonely crusade. If nothing else, our goal is to remind anyone who feels they are drowning inside the system that they are not alone.
The Performance Project @ University Settlement's support has allowed us to begin exploring this project on our feet, and we're thrilled to invite you into our process. The workshop showing will be followed by a brief group discussion on both evenings. We look forward to seeing you there!
