The Apollos! We Who Reach for the Stars!
Come celebrate MLK weekend where the idea for the holiday began. Oakland Technical High School's award winning, pre-professional theatre company, OakTech Rep is celebrating Oakland Tech's rich history through an original theatrical production honoring the amazing story of the Oakland Tech, 81' "Apollo" class, who were being responsible for creating MLK Jr.'s birthday into a California state holiday. Come experience a theatrical interpretation of the inspiring story of the young Apollos from 1978-81, who were led by their amazing teacher, Tay MacArthur to turn an idea of honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday into a bill, and then into a state holiday. OakTech Rep members interviewed original Apollos, Tay MacArthur, and those that supported them, to collaboratively write this original script that is rich in Martin Luther King's legacy of Love, Justice, and Perseverance. Lead writer and poet: Samuel Getachew. Artistic program director and teacher: Ena Dallas. Technical director Casey Fern. Performances are in collaboration with the O.T. music department and will be: January 16th, 17th, and 18th @ 7pm and January 19th @ 5 p.m. Tickets are 10.00 general admission, and 5.00 OUSD student tickets are at the door.
