MIRIAM: A New Musical
Miriam: A New Musical is a Broadway-style musical (Music by Debbie Friedman {an international icon of biblical and scripture-inspired music} and Book by Alan D. Kaplan and Tom Anastasi). This play is the story of the important role played by a Jewish biblical woman in the exodus of the Jews from Egypt and their survival for forty years in the desert allowing them to enter the Holy Land. Miriam was one of the seven named prophets of Israel, and Scripture describes her alongside of Moses and Aaron as delivering the Jewish people from exile in Egypt. The first woman to bear the label Prophet, she is the archetype of the female prophetic tradition even as Moses heads the male. Miriam had a gift from God to find water, making possible the 40-year survival of the Jewish people during their wanderings in the desert on their way to the Holy Land. This upbeat show contains 21 songs by Debbie Friedman (some previously not recorded) arranged for mixed voices and orchestra by Israeli composer/arranger Or Oren. Original choreography by Bruce Williams incorporates traditional folk, ballet, modern jazz, and tap. The stage director is Alan Kaplan and music director is Judy Hayward.
Miriam: A New Musical covers the time period from when Miriam helps Moses find his place in the Egyptian Pharaohs court through the Exodus from Egypt, receiving the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai, and finally her death without ever reaching the Holy Land. We see her humanity, her frustrated love, her struggles dealing with her brothers and with God.
