Comedy Returns to El Rio! is a popular monthly comedy show produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District every third Friday of the month. Now in its 11th year and showcasing an eclectic mix of intelligent comedians from the Bay Area and beyond, the event was created in order to bring back to life a comedy show that used to take place at El Rio in the 1980s and 1990s. The Bay Area Reporter (BAR) recently named the show Best Comedy Night for the second consecutive year.
The Friday January 17th show features Dhaya Lakshminarayanan, Joe Klocek, Ian Williams, Victor Pacheco, and Lisa Geduldig.
Dhaya Lakshminarayanan is the 2016 winner of the Liz Carpenter Political Humor Award (previously awarded to Samantha Bee and Wanda Sykes) presented by the National Womens Political Caucus. Comedy Central Asia crowned Dhaya the Grand Prize Winner of The Ultimate Comedy Challenge. She is the sole subject of the documentary NerdCool which premiered at the LA Comedy Festival in 2018. KQED named her one of the twenty Women to Watch, a series celebrating women artists, creatives and makers in the Bay Area who are pushing boundaries in 2016. She was named one of The Bay Areas 11 Best Standup Comedians in 2016 and 13 San Francisco Standup Comedians to Go See Now in 2018 by SFist. The SF Weekly named her one of the 16 Bay Area Performers to Watch in 2016. The San Francisco Bay Guardian named her Best Comedian 2013 in the Best of the Bay Readers Poll. She has opened, featured for or worked with: Janeane Garofalo, Marc Maron, Greg Behrendt, Jello Biafra, the late Dick Gregory, Anthony Jeselnik, Maz Jobrani, and Greg Proops. She introduced former Vice President Al Gore at an event, and he then laughed onstage at her joke, so technically she once opened for Al Gore. She has performed internationally in Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. In the US she has been an invited performer at Bridgetown Comedy Festival (Portland, OR), San Francisco Sketchfest, the Boston Comedy Festival (semifinalist), and Laugh Your Asheville Off (Asheville, NC). Dhaya is a frequent comedic storyteller on NPRs Snap Judgment and is currently the host of San Franciscos monthly Moth StorySLAM after winning a Moth StorySLAM and competing in the GrandSLAM at the Castro Theater. Prior to funny and show business, Dhaya was a venture capitalist, management consultant, and two-time MIT graduate.
Joe Klocek is a square peg in a round hole sort of guy, raised a Midwesterner, so he has manners, but living in San Francisco for 20 years. He does two things great: tells stories and talks to the crowd. He did a two-month "comic in residency" at the first comedy club in Shanghai where he recorded an album exclusively for the ex-pat community living and laughing there. He has been featured on NPR's "Snap Judgment" and on Comedy Centrals "Live at Gotham," "Last Comic Standing," and was commentator for the Emmy award-winning documentary "A Bridge so Far." Co-creator of the critically acclaimed storytelling show "Previously Secret Information," Joe has also been a runner-up in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition and the "Seattle Comedy Competition and was voted "Best Comic" in the 2011 SF Weekly Readers Poll. Joe has performed at every major comedy club in the country including Alaska.
Ian Williams began performing in comedy clubs in the Midwest after leaving graduate school in 1984. He has appeared on MTV, A&E, Star Search, and Showtime. Williams has lived in San Francisco for more than two decades and appears at Bay Area clubs including Cobb's and The Punchline. He also has worked as a teacher while partnering with his spouse to run a family that has stayed in operation since 1995.
Victor Pacheco is larger than life and larger than most comedians, yet he brings an unmatched energy to the stage to tell his real-life funny stories and observations. Meester Pachecos personal experiences as an educator, married man, and unhealthy-lifestyle-choice-maker fascinate audiences across the West Coast. Victors quick wit, exceptional one-liners, and warm personality have made him a favorite at comedy clubs, colleges, and theaters. He has worked along side nationally touring titans of industry including Paul Rodriguez, Jay Mohr, Pablo Francisco, John Witherspoon, Big Jay Oakerson, and Josh Wolf. Victor performs for Veterans of Foreign Wars and is a regular at the San Jose Improv Comedy Club.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer whos the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ (which celebrates its 28th Annual shows this December) and Comedy Returns to El Rio. Lisa moonlights as a freelance arts publicist.
