Ivy, an experienced actor and former member of the English Shakespeare Company is also a lifetime member of the renowned Actor Studio and is considered by the US government as an alien of extraordinary ability. As a result she received an O1 Visa, followed by a Green Card for permanent residency. Ivy has been directed at the Studio by Oscar winners Ellen Burstyn, Lee Grant & more recently by Estelle Parsons in My Story, My Voice.
My Story, My Voice is a one-woman play and a true story about a young British girl of Nigerian descent who is cast out of her family home into the world of a childrens home and multiple foster parents, only to return to the troubled home of her own parents. It is set in 1970s England. In this story, the main protagonist struggles to find acceptance in an environment of hostility and actual child abuse.
The play brings into focus some of the struggles and pressures that might be experienced by children of immigrants in western society. It highlights the more universal experience of the vulnerability of childhood and the ways in which children are completely at the mercy of adults, often internalizing all the misplaced messaging they receive about their identities. My Story, My Voice reminds us that even in the bleakest of beginnings, there is hope and even triumph (please see website for more information at www.mystorymyvoicetheplay.com).
...we taste the jelly tarts and sweets, we see the bright colors of paints in toilet water, and we hear the solace in the local music teachers piano... and the unspeakable vulnerabilities of human skin. My Story, My Voice is a tale of beauty and violence, wounds and healing, and the hope that endures through all. Dr. Mahlika Hopwood, Fordham University 01/21/19
