Neal Cassady Birthday Bash
NEAL CASSADY BIRTHDAY BASH FEBRUARY 7th
*David Amram Quartet to headline 11th Annual Event
* Very Special Guest Speaker - Neals son John Allen Cassady.
On Friday February 7th the David Amram Quartet will headline the 11th annual Neal Cassady Birthday Bash starting at 8:00pm, upstairs at the Mercury Café at 2199 California Street in Denver. The Bash will also feature poets, speakers and reminiscences from Neal's son John Allen Cassady and others. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from BrownPaperTickets.com.
Octogenarian David Amram was a collaborator of both Cassady and Jack Kerouac and has performed with Charles Mingus, Bob Dylan, Aaron Copeland, Willie Nelson, Arthur Miller, Thelonious Monk and many others.
In addition, a scale model maquette of a life size sculpture of Neal and Jack Kerouac by noted bronze artist Sutton Betti will be on display. This is monument is proposed for placement at Sonny Lawson Field at 23rd and California. The location figures prominently in Kerouacs best-selling book On the Road.
Also, John Hayden will lead a walking tour of Neals Denver haunts starting at the Mercury Café at 3pm on Friday February 7th prior to the Bash. For additional information on the tour and to secure a place, please email haydenpryor@msn.com.
And, coinciding with the 11th Annual Bash, the Denver Public Library will host an exhibit at the Central Branch located at 10 W. 14th Ave. Pky. entitled, Neal Cassadys Denver. The exhibit featuring first editions and other memorabilia relating to Cassadys Denver years will run from January 10th to March 31st.
The Bash is held annually in cooperation with the Cassady Estate to celebrate the life of Denvers self-described unnatural son, Neal Cassady. Cassadys influence on literary and pop culture is well documented. He was the archetypical Beat writer as well as the protagonists of Jack Kerouacs On the Road, muse for Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe and driver of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters bus, Further. Throughout his life Neal exuded a style and distinct Denver cool which secured his stature as a true American original. Cassady who died in 1968 would have been 94 years old on February 8.
