Ames Sheldon will discuss the medical miracles conducted at Variety Heart Hospital in Minneapolis during the 1950s. She will also reveal the name of the famous movie star who urged audiences to make donations in support of this hospital. At the end she will read from her novel Dont Put the Boats Away, which features a heart surgeon at the University of Minnesota in the years following World War II. A book signing will follow the talk.
About the Speaker:
Ames Sheldon is a historical fiction writer based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Her debut novel, Eleanors Wars, won the 2016 Benjamin Franklin Gold Award for Best New Voice: Fiction. The book's sequel, Don't Put the Boats Away, was named a finalist in Historical Fiction by the 2019 Best Book Awards. Previously, Sheldon worked as a grantwriter for the Minnesota Historical Society and the Minneapolis Public Library. She was lead author and associate editor of the reference book Womens History Sources: A Guide to Archives and Manuscript Collections in the United States.
