Disability studies is a growing interdisciplinary field. There is a new vibrant community of disabled artists, writers, dancers and creators of all kinds making their presence known. In this course, we will explore disability identity through narratives that present disability as lived experience. These narratives include Nussbaums Good KIngs, Bad Kings, and excerpts from the Unbroken: 13 Stories Starring Disabled Teens. Together we will take a moment to reflect on how these narratives shape our beliefs. In a safe arena, we will explore disability identity through creating narratives of our own, freewriting and sharing as time allows.
Do you have anyone in your life that lives with physical or mental condition that limits their movements, senses or activities? Have you ever wanted to write a character with a disability, but you aren't sure where to start? This class is for you. Please come with pen, paper and an open mind.
