¡FLAMENCO! w/ Lindsey Bourassa and Guest Artists
Local flamenco dancer Lindsey Bourassa returns with two of the most sought-after flamenco artists in the US - flamenco singer Bárbara Martínez & flamenco guitarist Cristian Puig - for two performances that highlight the interconnection between flamenco dance, song and guitar through traditional styles such as soleá and tarantos. Having collaborated regularly, these three artists uphold and honor the power of flamenco's storytelling ability through an emotive call and response of melodies, rhythms and movements. About the Performers
Dancer - Based in Portland, Maine, Lindsey Bourassa is a flamenco dancer, choreographer, and the founding director of Bourassa Dance Studio of Portland, Maine, where she teaches Flamenco Arts. Lindsey received her Master of Flamencology Degree from ESMUC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain) in 2019; her Bachelor of Cultural Dance Studies from Goddard College (USA) in 2009, with a specialization in flamenco and salsa; and her Certificate of Professionalization in Flamenco Arts at El Centro de Arte y Flamenco de Sevilla (Spain) in 2012. She has dedicated herself to the study of flamenco since 2004, studying in Spain, France, Canada, and the United States with flamencos such as Miguel Vargas, Esperanza and Curro Fernandez, Carmen Ledesma, La Choni, Adela Campallo, and Ursula Lopez, among many others. She has taught and performed in both Spain and the United States with national and international flamenco artists. Lindsey is the recipient of the 2019 Mission Award, Mayo Street Arts; 2018 New England Dance Fund, New England Foundation for the Arts; 2017 Continuing Education Grant, New Ventures Maine; 2016 Project Grant, Maine Arts Commission; 2013 Visibility Grant, Maine Arts Commission; 2011 Good Idea Grant, Maine Arts Commission.
Singer - Bárbara Martínez grew up performing in New York City. Originally from Venezuela, she comes from a lineage of Argentinian tango singers, including her grandmother Morenita Rey and great-aunt Libertad Lamarque. For almost 20 years Bárbara has worked as a dancer and singer with several flamenco dance companies, as well as productions of Carmen and La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera, where she also sang as a child. In 2010, Bárbara performed to a sold out house at Carnegie Hall/Weill, singing an eclectic repertoire of flamenco, Latin and world music with a magnificent group of musicians. She has appeared in the documentary Sobre Las Olas A Story of Flamenco in the U.S. by Carolina Loyola-Garcia and the photography exhibit entitled 100 Years of Flamenco in New York at the NY Performing Arts Library.
Guitarist - Cristian Puig was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, into a family of flamenco artists including his mother, flamenco singer Gloria Monreal, and his father, flamenco guitarist Pablo Puig. When he was 19 years old, Cristian began his studies in classical guitar at the conservatory of Manuel de Falla. Soon he took classes in flamenco guitar with Quique de Cordoba and furthered his studies in jazz, bossa nova and contemporary music with various teachers. Based in New York, he performs nationally and internationally as one of the most sought-after flamenco guitarists residing in the US.
