Don't Drop That Character - an Improvised Comedy Workshop
Don't drop that character an Improvised comedy workshop
Improvising interesting characters is fun, and audiences can remember a consistent and curious creation years after seeing a show. But, how do we create coherent, real and exciting characters that we love to play, and our audiences want to see more of?
This workshop will help you make great characters part of every improv scene you do, and we will understand how a character can remain fresh, thrilling and funny throughout long form improv sets.
We will spend the first hour on character development techniques looking at ways we can stimulate the imagination, but the real fun will be choosing one character and exploring it in detail through an afternoon of exercises, games and scenes. By delving deep into a single creation, we will discover how each character can have a game of its own and how fascinating worlds become when we investigate the specifics behind the creatures that inhabit them.
How would that miserable man fall in love? How would that excitable fox sing a song? How would that fantastical monster you created act in a serious family scene?
This workshop is for actors, comedians and improvisers who are interested in any type of improvisation, from game based short form, to theatrical long form.
Owen Scrivens (Open Heart Theatre) and Jess O'Neill (Casino Improv) are improvisers who first met performing in Improvathons and improvised soap operas for Impropriety in Liverpool. These formats involve playing the same character for many hours and they want to share what they have learned about the joy of getting to know a character over a prolonged period of play.
