Shelly King
Shelley King is royalty in Austin, Texas. Shelley King has been touring Texas, the US and the world since her debut in 1998 spreading the love of good friends and good times to all who hear her. In that time she has been appointed State Musician by the Texas Legislature, won several Austin Music Awards, had her songs recorded by numerous musicians, toured over a million miles, received terrestrial, streaming, and satellite radio support, and performed for standing room crowds at venues as varied as house concerts to large international festival stages. Kick Up Your Heels, Shelley Kings ninth release on her own Lemonade Records features Grammy award winning steel guitar goddess Cindy Cashdollar, Grammy nominated pianist Marcia Ball, and Grammy winning vocalist Delbert McClinton and topped off with guitar licks and vocals from Carolyn Wonderland. Special guests include appearances by Lumineers bassist Byron Issaacs and, Shelleys favorite vocalists and bringers of Louisiana style soul and grease, subdudes members Tim Cook, Steve Amedee and John Magnie. Rounding out the recording is Shelleys A-team road band: Texas and Austin Hall of Fame bassist Sarah Brown, multi-instrumentalist, guitar and mandolin go-to man, Marvin Dykhuis, keyboard and accordionist Chip Dolan, guitarist Tony Redman and longtime drummer Perry Drake. Currently available on CD, streaming or download from your favorite online outlet, a limited number of 180 gram audiophile quality LP vinyl records will be released soon at special release events, during live shows and selected record stores nationally. . Shelley Kings full length Kick Up Your Heels CD album opens with the storm-set Levons New Drumset, followed by the southern rock, Cindy Cashdollar lap steel infused Stormin in the South. The party starts rolling
with the King, Ball and McClinton shared lead vocals on Hurricane Party and closes out side one with the rockabilly tinged, sure to be dancehall classic One Shot At a Time featuring dual guitar duels from Marvin Dykhuis and Tony Redman. Side two opens with the title track, Kick Up Your Heels to which the subdudes members added a little crazy, a second line snare rhythm, their rich harmonies and fun extras. Marcia Ball plays piano and John Magnie backs her on accordion, a first time musical collaboration for them. Soulville is Dinah Washington penned RnB classic redone by Shelley and band with Carolyn Wonderland adding guitar and background vocals. The final track, How Eagles Fly brings the album to a rockin close, couching patriotism without jingoistic pride into uplifting, feel-good riffs. Always fiercely independent, King is a one woman music empire writing her own songs, producing her own records, handling her own record label, publishing company, management and booking. When not fronting her band or performing as a solo act she can be found adding vocal tracks at recording studios around Austin, fronting several side project bands or traveling as a well respected side-musician with high profile touring bands. King also serves as a board member of HOME (Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers) which strives to alleviate the suffering of local elderly musicians who may confront homelessness.
