Sound Stories
The stories SLP presents today are those of myth, of place, of stars, and always, of music.
Boston composer Marti Epsteins liquid, fragile is a stunning mixed quartet, placing the role of silence right alongside the role of sound in ways that both reinforce the heard music and the heard silence. We are pairing Epsteins work with one of her favorite pieces, Toru Takemitsus cello/piano duo Orion taken from his larger work, Orion and Pleiades. The rest of the program is just as stunning, from Jessie Montgomerys playful string quartet Strum, to Lou Harrisons wonderful work for flute and percussion Ariadne, to Jeffrey Mumfords brilliant Two Haiku Settings pf Place and Love, for voice, cello, and percussion.
Selections from Lera Auerbachs collection of 24 preludes for violin and piano will be a high point of this program as well as LA choral composer Amy Gordons beautiful song for mixed ensemble, The Breeze at Dawn.
