Despite all the best efforts of a Human Resources Department, litigation sometimes cannot be avoided after an employee has been terminated. This seminar will focus on important strategies both before and during litigation to avoid becoming a "dream case" for a plaintiff attorney.
What are the most common areas of exposure for employers in employment law litigation? What steps should every employer take to avoid potential landmines to avoid employment litigation?
What steps should an employer take at the time of termination and just after termination,but before litigation, to avoid exposure in litigation.
Once litigation has been initiated, what should HR professionals do to mitigate potentialexposure for the employer?

About the Presenter: Emily Sheldrick--Attorney, Dunn & Sheldrick, P.S.
Since 1996, Emily has focused her law practice on employment-related disputes and providing advice to clients on employment matters. Emily advises employers on handbooks, agreements,terminations, discipline and risk management. She represents employers in government and administrative investigations, including the Human Rights Commission, EEOC, and Labor & Industries.
Emily also has extensive experience in litigating employment disputes, such as discrimination, unpaid wages, harassment, breach of contract, non-competition agreements, and retaliatory discharge in both Washington and Oregon federal and state courts, as well as arbitrations and administrative hearings. Emily also handles complex civil litigation, such as commercial and business disputes.
Prior to opening her own law practice in Vancouver in 2000, Emily Sheldrick worked at Sebris Busto James, P.S., an employment law boutique firm in Bellevue, Washington and Williams,Kastner & Gibbs, LLC, one of Seattle's largest law firms, where she represented clients including Microsoft, Intel, and Alaska Airlines. Emily also provided in-house employment relations advice for Hollywood Entertainment in Wilsonville, Oregon.
Emily is a frequent speaker with bar associations on civil litigation and employment matters. She is the immediate Past President and current Vice President of the Clark County Chapter of the Washington Women Lawyers. She is also a member of the Clark County Bar Association Bench- Bar Committee and received the bar association's Donald Simpson Award for Service to the Profession. Emily enjoys volunteering her time on civics matters in the local schools.
Emily Sheldrick received her undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Oregon State University and graduated with honors from the University of Washington School of Law.
