Please allow approximately 90 minutes for each seminar (60-75 minutes for the presentation plus a Q & A session to follow). Please arrive promptly between 12:45-1:00pm / 4:45-5:00pm respectively for each seminar.
Seminar 1 1:00pm Washington Cheese Past and Present Seminar description The current wave of artisan cheesemakers is just part of the story of dairying and making cheese in the state of Washington. In this session, we'll taste cheeses from contemporary cheesemakers and use them to launch a discussion of many of the state's unique cheese stories from decades past. Highlights include a discussion of the goat's milk cheeses of the 1920s, the state's early blue cheese makers as well as how the industry-wide effort to develop a rindless cheese led to the creation of the famed Cougar Gold, still made by Washington State University. Presenter: Tami Parr, author of Artisan Cheese of the Pacific Northwest and Pacific Northwest Cheese: A History (Oregon State University Press 2013). About the Presenter : Tami Parr created the website Pacific Northwest Cheese Project (pnwcheese.com) in 2004 as a means of exploring and documenting the region's growing artisan cheese movement. She has since authored two books about the wide world of cheese: Artisan Cheese of the Pacific Northwest (2009) and Pacific Northwest Cheese: A History (Oregon State University Press 2013).
Seminar 2 5:00pm Washington's Bountiful Harvest of Cheese - Islands to Desert and Mountains to Gorge Seminar description Can you taste the place from where the cheese is made? Does it pair nicely with the beer playfully poured on the side? Pairing locally made cheeses with beer and other delectables on the plate is a perfect back drop for learning more about the land from which they were produced - the bountiful harvest of the Pacific Northwest terroir.
Presenter: Julia Powers, CCP ACS The Traveling Cheesemonger
About the Presenter: Julia Powers is currently managing the Tasting Room for Mt Townsend Creamery at Pike Place Market - a historic location for showcasing handcrafted cheeses from the Olympic Peninsula. She got her cheese legs working for 8 years with Metropolitan Market - a family-owned PNW destination grocer.
