NOM: a community storytelling open mic about food
The storytelling AND food scenes in Berlin meet again this February in the newest and tastiest open mic in town: NOM. With a celebrity judges panel, silly and/or stunning prizes, and some fresh small plates served on the spot, NOM creates a unique space for audience members to share their own stories and get insight into other food experiences. NOM returns February 6 at Wein Salon (Schreinerstr 59 in Friedrichshain), with tickets at €8/adv, €10/door.
Doors open at 7:15pm--come in early for drink, vegetarian bits and bites, and the best choice of seats--and the stories get dished out starting at 8. The February NOM theme is FROM THE HEART.
*** Bits and bites sponsored by chef/food stylist Flora Hohmann, available first to advance ticket holders and then as supplies last on a donation basis (with proceeds going to charity).
*** NOTE: Advance tickets DO NOT guarantee a good seat. For that, we recommend getting there by 7:30pm.
HOW DOES NOM WORK? Audience members can sign up at the door to tell a 5-minute true-life food story or reminiscence or recipe history--from any culture or season--with a lucky eight to ten names being drawn at random. Celebrity judges from writing, performing, and/or food backgrounds will assess the stories and award prizes to the top three tellers.

RULES: - no notes (this is storytelling) - no costumes or props (this is not theatre) - only five minutes (with a one-minute grace period) AND - the story must be real and have happened to you. Stories often are funny and/or epic win, but we want to encourage people to consider sharing their sad, disturbing, poignant, serious, simple and/or "fail" experiences, too.
IMPORTANT: NOM is a judgement-free, no-diet-talk zone. We DO NOT welcome stories involving racism, classism, fatphobia, or fetishizing/exoticising of any cuisine.
NOT A NOMMER YET? Don't worry. Sit back and enjoy. All we ask is: - No interrupting. - No heckling. - Don't yuck on someone else's yum. Additionally, all audience members are eligible to win a door prize if they enter their anonymous food question or confession into our potluck pot.
Founded and hosted by Cameryn Moore, the creator of the Smut Slam global network of community dirty-storytelling events, NOM is co-produced by German comedian and cookbook editor Lisa Frischemeier.
