Tom May and Doug Smith
Tom May has been a full time folk artist for almost 50 years.   Kicking off his career in grand style in the 1970's by opening a number of times for Gordon Lightfoot, he went on to also share stages with Joni Mitchell, Alabama, Willie Nelson, and many others-in between a cross-continental schedule of solo dates in some of the legendary folk venues of the time.

Tom has gone on to release fourteen of his own albums. In 1985 he began what came to be his nationally-syndicated radio program  River City Folk, still heard on over 50 stations each week and XM satellite radio. Tom also founded and still produces Winterfolk, Portland's largest annual folk music event now in its 32nd year. winterfolk benefits JOINpdx, an organization that provides stable housing for thousands of homeless Portland folks each year. Tom has played major festivals, coffeehouses, and clubs all across the U.S. and overseas. Tom's songs feature history, wine, romance and stories of folks that he has met along the way, all performed with his resonant baritone voice and expressive guitar arrangements. He has truly lived  a life in song,
forging a fulfilling career in this challenging profession.

Doug Smith is simply one of the finest acoustic guitarists of his generation. He shares a Grammy Award for his work on "Pink Guitar; songs of Henry Mancini" album, and also claimed the coveted title of national fingerstyle champion at the Winfield, Kansas festival  in 2006. In addition to being a consummate, brilliant technician on the guitar, Doug is also genuine and entertaining on stage, punctuating his tunes with stories and an engaging sense of humour. A fine and expressive singer and devout student of the music, he is also a beloved teacher and clinician  from the Pacific Northwest to Japan.

Tom and Doug met in Omaha in 1991, been friends ever since, and have done many shows with each other through the decades. Each artist does a portion of the show solo, but the majority of the presentation is shared by these two exceptional musicians. Their duo concert at the Artichoke is a Portland winter tradition!
