If one of Mary Oliver's poignant poems has ever soothed, exhilarated, inspired, or saddened you, then you have been touched by her lifelong fascination with the intimate relationship between the natural world and our personal soulscapes.
Mary Oliver died January 17, 2019 at the age of 83. A prolific and decorated poet whose honors include the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, she considered poetry a sacred community ritual.
And so, this is how we hope to come together to celebrate her life and work on the first anniversary of her death. After some biographical information, well listen to many of her most popular poems, such as "The Summer Day, The Journey, Mysteries, Yes, and When Death Comes. Please bring your favorite Mary Oliver poem, and if you feel comfortable, read it and share its impact on your one wild and precious life. Well also deepen our understanding of her insights by responding to and sharing a few writing prompts.
In Mary's words, Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like wild geese, harsh and exciting over and over, announcing your place in the family of things, and we invite you to reconnect to the wonder and inspiration of her awesome poetry.
