Come join us for the return of Baron Tymas, Mark Wells, Pete Kimosh and Brevan Hampden to the Sharp Nine Gallery, Saturday, Jan 24, 2020 at 8pm. The group will play original pieces and tribute music built on a jazz base, with myriad variations, rich in rhythm, melody, harmony, improvisation and spirit. Guitarist Baron Tymas hails from Washington, D.C. He moved to Durham from Richmond, VA in 2001 to join the NCCU faculty. He has released three cds as a leader: Montréal (2017), Insight at Midnight (2009) and Blues for the Tribe (2007). He has performed and recorded with many great artists and ensembles and given many concerts, clinics and workshops in and outside the U.S. He is also a Fulbright scholar, NC Arts Council Composer Fellowship awardee and Howard University alumnus. Keyboardist and vocalist Mark Wells has been a musical catalyst in the Triangle since 1998, when he graduated from UNC with a BA in Psychology. Since then, he has performed, recorded and toured with numerous great North Carolina artists and groups, including Peter Lamb and the Wolves, the Organophonics, Albert Strong, Chris Stamey and the NC Jazz Repertory Orchestra. He is a standout artist, rich with creativity, intensity and taste. Bassist Pete Kimosh was born in Cleveland Ohio and has toured Europe and the Americas with multiple bands. Pete studied orchestral and jazz bass at UNC and has found his voice in many genres, including jazz, hip-hop, salsa, funk, rock, orchestral and chamber-soul. As a member of The Beast, he has done over 500 workshops/shows in schools and colleges. He also plays with Peter Lamb and the Wolves, Shana Tucker, Orquesta GarDel, The Tim Smith Band, Pavelid Castenedaf, Primera Jazz, Mint Julep Jazz Band and Bethel AME Gospel Choir. Pete runs Deep Sound Studio in Durham, where he has recorded many of the top talents in NC. Percussionist Brevan Hampden was born in New York, to a high-level musical family. His father is the great drummer Ivan Hampden, and his mother is the great keyboardist and musical director Brenda Hampden. Brevan recently completed his masters in Jazz Studies/Performance at CUNY Queens College, and is also an alumnus of the NCCU Jazz Program. He has performed with many Grammy award-winning artists, such as Bilal, Ben Williams, Phil Cook, Roy Hargrove, Myron Walden, Frank McComb. Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, GuitarHeels, Tito Rojas, Richie Ray, Aretha Franklin, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Nice N Smooth, Raekwon and 9 th Wonder. He often performs in the Triangle with Orquesta GarDel, PrimeraJazz, Conjunto Breve, and many others.
