Phill Argyris Trio
The Phill Argyris Trio came together via their common friendship and collaboration with late Boston-area jazz guitarist, Bob Johnson. Pianist Phill Argyris and bassist Jerry Wilfong played with Johnson for more than 30 years around the Boston Jazz scene and performed together as far away as France. Drummer Sheldon Perkins worked his way into the band by marrying Bobs daughter Lisa.
The trio plays straightforward interpretations from the Great American Songbook with an energy that is sometimes driving and sometimes pensive. This show will feature a number of selections from Phills albums Next Steps and Quartet Stories as well as Johnsons album Musings. This performance will mark the first time these three musicians have played together since before Bobs passing in 2016. Theyre all very much looking forward to the reunion.
Phill Argyris
Pianist Phill Argyris, a long-time student of Jazz great Harold Mabern, clearly expresses the American Jazz tradition. Phill has studied with Harold Mabern for the past 25 years in New York City, and has also studied with Jazz greats Cedar Walton and Billy Taylor. Phills original compositions are said to reflect the influences of James Williams and John Coltrane. Phill says of his own style: I like hard driving, swinging rhythms, melodic compositions, and the use of fourths in harmonies. His piano style has also been described as percussive. He includes among his greatest influences the legendary pianists Bud Powell, Red Garland and McCoy Tyner, and of course, Harold Mabern and Cedar Walton.
Jerry Wilfong
Jerry Wilfong is an active Boston area freelance bassist. Jerry studied in the early seventies at Berklee College of Music, and later with bassist Joe Holovnia. He has attended masters classes by bassists John Clayton, Jr. and Harvie S.
Jerry performs regularly around New England in a variety of styles with many Jazz ensembles, including groups led by Paul Broadnax, Mark Jodice, Stan Strickland, Garrison Fewell, Steve Soares, Rich Falco, Ferdinando Argenti, Jane Miller, Maggie Galloway, Monica Hatch, and Jim Porcella. He is recorded on CDs by Sai Ghose, Matt Richard, Phill Argyris, Steven Kirby, John Wilkins, and Chris Taylor, and has toured Russia, Romania, and France. Jerry has performed with distinguished Jazz artists Leni Stern, John Stowell, Richie Cole, Joe Hunt, Greg Abate, Gray Sargent, and Jon Wheatley.
Sheldon Perkins
For the past 40+ years drummer Sheldon Perkins has played a wide range of styles from symphonic percussion to rock, blues, big band, soul and funk. Perkins is known for having big ears, an attribute that is reflected in his unobtrusive and melodic style. He dipped his toe into jazz in 1998 when his late father-in-law, Boston-area jazz guitarist Bob Johnson, asked him to play several tracks on his CD Musings. In the years since, Sheldon, Phill and Jerry have played together in Bobs quartet whenever they made their way up to Maine.
Tickets are $12.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door.
