Comedy Returns to El Rio! is a popular monthly comedy show produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District every third Friday of the month. Now in its 11th year and showcasing an eclectic mix of intelligent comedians from the Bay Area and beyond, the event was created in order to bring back to life a comedy show that used to take place at El Rio in the 1980s and 1990s. The Bay Area Reporter (BAR) recently named the show Best Comedy Night for the second consecutive year.
The Friday December 20th show features Aundre the Wonderwoman, Nick Leonard, Geneva Rust-Orta, Helen Chu, and Lisa Geduldig.
Aundre the Wonderwoman has garnered a reputation as a solid talent dishing up content-based comedy ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime. This anti-death penalty lawyer by day/comedian by night is a keen observer of human behavior who will have you laughing at everything from disability to the politics of the day. Her credits include The Funniest Woman in Half Moon Bay, Oaklands Funniest Comic on the Strip, and Winner of the Inaugural Russian River Comedy Competition. She was a semi-finalist in the 2005 San Francisco International Comedy Competition and in 2008 received the Stand Up For Justice Award for her work against the death penalty.
Nick Leonard performs his dry and sly humor at clubs around California and all over the world including Marsh Theater, NYU, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The San Francisco Fringe Festival, and the Vancouver International Comedy Festival. He is the co-founder of the QComedy Showcase and the popular Bilarious Show in the National Queer Arts Festival. Nick also performs regularly as his alter ego, Ginorma Desmond.
Geneva Rust-Orta is a stand up comedian from Oakland, who got her start in comedy while at university in Northeast England. While in England, she performed all over the UK and obtained the title of "Second Funniest Jew" at the 2015 Jewish Comedian of the Year Competition in London. She has taken two shows: Messed Up and Born with a Bush to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Geneva has performed at Cobbs, Punchline, and SF Sketchfest and was recently featured on Comedy Central's Bay Area Clusterfest Showcase. She helps produce Resistance is Fertile, a monthly comedy show that features the best female comedy talent in San Francisco. You can find her at El Rio every 2nd Friday, on her monthly show, Millennials Ruin Everything.
Helen Chu is a San Francisco based comedian. Her first stage experience came from winning her High School mathelete competition. Now she formulates great jokes that equal big laughs at Cobbs Comedy Club, Tommy Ts and major clubs in the Bay Area. You may have seen her at honors club at UC Berkeley if you majored in mechanical engineering, where she spent most of her time thinking about fluid dynamics. Now she spends most of her time thinking about how to engineer a flood of laughter at comedy shows.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer whos the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ (which celebrates its 27th Annual shows this December), Comedy Returns to El Rio, and the monthly comedy show, Comedy at Ashkenaz! on the second Thursday of the month at Ashkenaz in Berkeley.
