POSTPONED: EARPLAY: Life Circles
Preconcert talk at 6:45 p.m. Concert at 7:30 p.m.
Earplays third and final regular season concert will feature three world premieres by California composers Richard Aldag, Hyo-Shin Na, and Jen Wang, and a performance of Kaija Saariahos piano trio, Je sens un deuxième coeur.
Kaija Saariaho is well known for her vibrant and colorful music. Je sens un duxième coeur (2003) for viola, cello, and piano draws on some of the material from her second opera, Adriana Mater, but significantly recomposed as chamber music. Each movement alternates between lush, lyrical and texturally colorful music and aggressive, even violent music. Though the whole betrays an intense romanticism with both brilliant ensemble and virtuosic part writing.
Mary Chun leads the full ensemble with guest tenor, Michael Dailey, in the world premiere of Aldags Songs of Majnn Leyla. His settings of four poems by the 7th century Bedouin poet Qays al-Mulawwah represent a deep and tragic love in finely crafted melody and intimate rhythm.
Hyo-shin Nas music blends Korean and Western styles and performance techniques. Her new work for oboe, clarinet, viola, and cello receives its world premiere and is an Earplay commission. Jen Wangs music is both lyrical and richly textural. Her new work for flute, clarinet, and violin also receives its world premiere and is an Earplay commission.
