Trauma 101 (CYS FOSTER FAMILIES): Understanding Trauma, Resilience and Trauma-Informed Care
Training is provided by support from the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Behavioral Health Community Impact Fund.
Intended Audience: This training is designed to provide a foundational overview and awareness of trauma, resilience, and trauma-informed care for anyone in the community who interacts with individuals and families who may have experienced trauma, including human services professionals, educators, the faith community, law enforcement and criminal justice professionals, healthcare and behavioral health providers, employers, government agencies, and others.
Training content:
1) Why learn about trauma 2) Trauma definitions, types of trauma, causes of trauma 3) Traumas symptoms & effects 4) Re-traumatization and how to avoid it 5) Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) research 6) Neuroscience of trauma and resilience 7) Links between trauma and social, emotional and physical health 8) Whats needed to heal from trauma 9) Secondary/vicarious trauma and self-care for professionals 10) Principles of Trauma-informed care and becoming a trauma-informed organization
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Define trauma and describe how traumatic experiences can affect individuals throughout their life. 2. Describe how trauma relates to addiction, mental health, risk-taking behaviors and cycles of violence and abuse. 3. Compare factors for risk and resilience that can result in different individual responses to traumatic events. 4. Recognize ways in which community agencies and organizations may re-traumatize those they intend to serve. 5. Identify potential causes and indicators of vicarious or secondary trauma among staff. 6. Review self-care practices for professionals working with traumatized people. 7. Recommend improvements to policies and procedures to make them trauma-informed.
