Jenny Van West, Matt Newberg & Jeff Chrismas
Our very first Songwriters Showcase!
Jenny Van West
As a singer she could easily succeed at any vocal style she pursued and would destroy (in a good way) the great American Songbook if she chose to. (Charlie Ricci, Bloggerhythms) Portland, ME-based Americana artist, Jenny Van Wests internationally-acclaimed April 2018 release, Happiness to Burn, fuses folk, rock, swing, and country in this follow-up to her award-winning 2015 album, Something Real. Happiness to Burn spent three months on the EuroAmericana Chart, peaking at #7. She has toured extensively in the United States, as well as the Netherlands and Germany. At home, Van West is the founder / director of the Immigrant Music Connection, the International Open Mic at Mayo Street Arts, and the Womens Singer-Songwriter-Composer Showcase at Blue. She won the Maine Songwriter's Association 2015 songwriting contest and was a finalist in 2017. In February 2020 she is headed back to Buddhland Studios in Los Angeles to record her third full-length album of original songs.
Matt Newberg
Weathered by salt and sea, Matt Newberg has been weaving his life and songs through the tall pines, rocky coast and granite mountains of Maine for over twenty years. Born in upstate New York, his family moved to the coastal town of Harpswell when he was aged five. There, he walked the rural roads, tipped sailboats on the bay and fought on the local playground after little league games. His musical career began in Burlington, Vermont while a student at UVM but his passion was kindled early on while listening to his mother sing James Taylor songs at the piano. His first physical memory of a song is Neil Youngs Sugar Mountain, an artist that continues to have a significant impact on his music.
His most recent release Hollow Days (2019) featured a duet with Lilly Hiatt (Nashville, TN) as well as harmonica wizardry from longtime collaborator Brian Steele (Burlington, VT). Hollow Days introduces his new band, The Hearts of Gold (H.O.G.) with Gregg Hoover on guitar, Jake McCarthy on bass and Joe Beninati on drums. For more info visit: www.mattnewberg.com.
Jeff Christmas
Jeff Christmas is a local singer-songwriter who has been playing in Southern Maine since he moved here 4 years ago. With a musical background that includes Classical music, bluegrass, avant-garde synth pop, traditional jazz and good old Americana Jeff aims to write songs that open genres and often touch on several in one tune. You might catch him as a part of the folk duo Finch, or solo, or collaborating with a number of local musicians. This is his first performance at Cadenza and he is very excited about it!
Tickets are $12.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door.
