THE KAORU WATANABE TAIKO CENTER preserves, teaches, and promotes various styles of Japanese contemporary and traditional music, with a focus on the shinobue bamboo flutes and Japanese percussion, including the taiko drum. Part of this mission includes fostering a community of practitioners, scholars and admirers of Japanese performing arts.
This year's Happyoukai, a recital, showcases various styles of music, from folk festival tradition to theater tradition to contemporary pieces. It also features a premiere of a Japanese story-telling and music project, Yukiwatari - Crossing the Snow. With a unique combination of Japanese instruments, piano, and percussions, the original music written by Midori Larsen invites the audience to the beautiful and wondrous world of a Japanese novelist, Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933).
Yukiwatari is performed in Japanese with English supertitles.
