Event
The Sea Ranch: The Early Years
Program Sponsored by: Sierra Pacific Windows
Presented By: DON JACOBS ARCHITECTS
Opening my architectural practice at The Sea Ranch in 1970, I designed over one hundred custom homes before moving to Southern California in 1986.
Starting with a short video from the current SFMOMA show on The Sea Ranch, you will learn about the cast of characters that came together to create the most highly awarded community in the 1960s and 1970s, why it was significant and why the lessons learned are still relevant. I will discuss the land planning, landscape architecture, and the architecture of The Sea Ranch and why they work so well (and why some of them don't!). All of this, and some inside anecdotes on life at The Sea Ranch, will be shared.
The Sea Ranch Chapel was a perfect example of all the right people coming together at the right time to create an iconic structure. Come and discover the story behind it all.
Learning Objectives:
How the most environmentally awarded and acclaimed resort community of the 60s and 70s started and the people behind it.
The environmental principles that were established to create the community.
Lessons learned from an environmentally focused community and how they can be applied to todays new communities.
How and why Sea Ranch architecture became its own style that became replicated all over the world.
