Matt Wilson Quintet: Honey & Salt
Matt Wilson has been a perennial favorite of Yakima's jazz aficionados since his first appearance in 2005 with the Bill Mays Trio when he thrilled the audience with the acoustics of the place by finishing a song with the tiniest tap on the smallest bell (and everybody heard it!).
Known for his antic cutups (he once premiered a song at The Seasons about skinny-dipping at the Red Lion), make no mistake: Matt Wilson is deeply serious about drumming and is sensitive to every note and quaver of the musicians he plays with. His audience participation stunts (he handed out signs to the audience saying "Cant We Be Friends?" for one song) seems facetious, but is a thought-through communal affirmation. But it's all fun, humor leads the way. Behind it all is a fabulous bandleader and a rock solid musician with something important to say.
Since The Seasons first "discovered" Matt in 2005, he has gone on to the greatest heights as well as personal tragedy. He was named Jazz Artist of the Year in 2018 by the Jazz Journalist Society. The same group named "Honey and Salt" the 2018 Record of the year. He's appeared on the cover of all the major jazz publications and regularly gives workshops all over the world that are uniformly applauded by participants.
His family life and trajectory was interrupted shortly after his last appearance at The Seasons in 2012, when Matt's wife, and mother of his two sons, lost a battle with leukemia. He celebrated her life and her amazing personality in music a few years later.
Both Matt and Martin Wind are life-long wine aficionados and have been big fans of Washington Wines since their first tour of wine country in 2006. Be at The Seasons to welcome them back!
