A Bigfoot Christmas
In response to a new surge in Bigfoot fascination, RiverStars is making Sasquatch the star of our new holiday show. Surprises are the hallmarks of holiday celebrations, and RiverStars promises a monumental one. Ok...well give you a hint! Some of your favorite cartoon characters are coming for Christmas dinner too! If talented youth dancing and acting their hearts out onstage doesnt bring on the Christmas spirit- then the sight of Bigfoot getting funky in the closing number surely will. Fantastical characters bring on the joy in this original dance and theatre tale about accepting the strange in everyone. Bigfoot is a real symbol for how the unknown intrigues us and sets our imaginations running, and this show delights both our fantasies and our better angels who strive to be upstanding humans.
RiverStars Performing Arts features more youth performers than ever before, with more than 80 whirling and twirling actors and dancers. The TwinkleStars (1st and 2nd grade) light up the stage with an epic dance to Rise and Shine, with music by Mr. Gnome. The EverStars (3rd and 4th grade) make magical appearances as woodland fairies and elves. The ArtNovas bark and tweet Christmas Joy, and the ArtStars lead the cast with surprise performances of our most cherished cartoon personalities. The Illinois Valley is ripe with young talent, and this performance offers many new faces in lead roles as well as return performances by outstanding ArtStars Naamah Ocean, Annie Lajcsak, and Meaghan Vallot, all graduating the program this year.
Since 2013 RiverStars has cultivated youth voice and power using dance and theater to galvanize community action. More than 15 hours of free dance and theatre programming are offered weekly to Illinois Valley students, with two much anticipated annual performances, one for the holidays and one in April, ringing in the Spring season. Students are empowered to participate in the writing and choreographing of the original shows, which are about topics relevant to rural life in the valley.
