ASCE COPRI Seattle Dinner Meeting - November 19, 2019
Topic: The Design and Construction of Marine Transmission Line Replacement Tower Foundations
Description: This presentation will focus on the Tacoma Public Utilities Potlatch Transmission Line, specifically the crossings of North Bay and Henderson Bay, and will describe some of the challenges of replacing aging towers and foundations supporting an active transmission line in a shallow marine environment.
Specific challenges faced on these projects include: seismic liquefaction-prone marine sediment overlying very dense glacially-consolidated soils; artesian groundwater; working with large barge mounted equipment in a shallow marine environment; narrow, low-clearance passages; working between active transmission lines; and a multitude of interested neighbors. Hear how the project team addressed each of these issues through early planning, site specific subsurface investigation, detailed design, ongoing consultant involvement, and a great deal of teamwork.
Speaker: Morgan McArthur, P.E.. Associate Geotechnical Engineer, GeoEngineers, Inc.
Morgan McArthur is an Associate geological engineer for GeoEngineers, Inc., where he works on projects throughout Puget Sound and Western Washington. Morgan has been working as a geological engineer in the Puget Sound area for 13 years, specializing in transportation and port and waterfront development.
