KITKA: Wintersongs
The Arcata Playhouse, located at 1251 Ninth Street, invites the public to Wintersongs sung by the womens vocal ensemble KITKA. KITKAs winter holiday program showcases seasonal music from a wide variety of Eastern European ethnic and spiritual traditions. These singers blend a contemporary sensibility with specialized vocal techniques from Eastern Europe that have been distilled over centuries. Using only their unaccompanied voices, they create a constantly shifting landscape of sound.
KITKA's material ranges from ancient village duets to complex choral works, from early music to contemporary theater. The many languages in which they sing are largely unfamiliar to American ears Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Georgian, Hungarian, Ladino, Latvian, Macedonian, Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Yiddish, with the occasional Latin, medieval Gallician, or ancient Greek. KITKA: joyful voices uniquely blended in exquisite dissonance and harmony.
After KITKAs Wintersongs, Chubritza, folk dancers, and members of the Balkan Music Meetup will open the floor for dancing, singing, snacks, and pre-solstice activities.
