Bring the Funk! A new series featuring a curated show by saxophonist Mike Caudill and bassist Blain Crawford both of the band City of Four. They play an original brand of instrumental music, influenced by jazz, funk, fusion, pop/rock, hip hop, and other genres. With each edition of this new series Mike and Blain will feature guest side players and a vocalist. Tonight's show features DOPE LOTUS.
Distinctive soulful vocals, tight funky grooves, poetic authenticity to their musical story, is what best describes the Dope Lotus. A 6-7 piece band straight out of New England, with rhythm section, and 3 vocalists they have been ready for their first album to finally come to fruition as their members have been playing for quite some time on the East Coast. The beat begins and ends with drummer Joaquin Santos of New Bedford, MA who started this project, and wanted nothing less than a funky foundation of players. With Yuki Kanesaka on Keys and Production of all of the recorded tracks at Cybersound Studios, Boston, MA, and Blain Crawford on Bass (live only, Key Bass on recording), Matt Antunes on Guitar, Joaquin knew he had the right recipe of great touch artistes that this project needed. The three vocalists and songwriters on their debut self labeled album are Ms. Evan Cole, Jason Shorter, and Matt Antunes on vocals and guitar. A couple of their influences are Chaka Khan, the Brand New Heavies, Robert Glasper, and Raphael Saadiq, to name a few. For the audience the Dope Lotus is a combination of musical genres between soul, jazz, and funk, with a multi-cultural group of musician friends. Each have a special dope sound, that when intertwined makes that Lotus image come alive in the music, something new, colorful and ever evolving.
