"Verena sings Marlene... ... and other movie & Broadway hits from the 30's & 40's"
Actress and vocalist Verena McBee will take her audience on a trip down Memory Lane at Pangea, Friday December 6. Performing favorites from her theater days in Germany,songs sung by Marlene Dietrich, Zarah Leander, the Comedian Harmonists, and the Andrew Sisters, plus classics by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht and others.
Since some of the witty and cheeky German lyrics had never been translated, McBee and Ellen Mandel, who will join her on piano, made their own translations and adaptations of these extremely entertaining lines. McBee and Mandel will premiere their creations Dec 6th, 2019.
You'll be torn between your plans for Johnny's Birthday, when you have other ideas for the Weekend & Sunshine. Of course, Lola always gets what she wants! Just know: If you encounter these two Lolas (alias McBee and Mandel) at Pangea on Dec 6, you won't Cry, because your love went away. After all, a Blue Angel will be watching over you. Verena McBee Born in Northern Germany Verena McBee has been has been always connected to the arts. Since childhood she took piano lessons and added the flute later. In 1993 she studied classical music (piano, flute, voice) & German language and literature at "University Osnabrueck. 1997 she made her First State examination. She was also accepted in Hamburg at "Schule fuer Schauspiel"(Acting School). Between 2000-2006 Verena appeared as actress and vocalist in Europe. She moved to NYC in 2007. Verena started studying Jazz Vocals with Brianna Thomas, Roberta Gambarini & Nicole Zuriatis Since 2009 she's appearing on the NYC jazz scene. She has appeared with David Kikoski, Mark Soskin, John Di Martino , Cecil McBee, George Cables and Victor Lewis. In January 2013 Verena produced her Debut Jazz album ("Can't help it !") In November of 2018 "U-PHORIA", her 2nd album with all compositions by jazz bassist Cecil McBee was released.
ELLEN MANDEL has composed songs to poems by E.E. Cummings, Seamus Heaney, W.B. Yeats, and others, with performances across the USA and in Europe, and is currently composing music for a second cycle of haiku by Daniel Neer. Ellen has also written music for over eighty plays at the Phoenix, Mint, Jean Cocteau Rep (Resident Composer), Pearl, and many regionals, and received a Scenie (L.A.), and numerous best music noms for her theater work.
