I Lift My Lamp Beside The Golden Door
Cheah Chan Duo opens its 11th season with "I Lift My Lamp Beside The Golden Door", a recital of songs about the immigrant experience in the United States. The performance will be held on Monday, November 18 at 8:00pm at the historic Church of Saint Luke in the Fields in the West Village.
The title of the concert is the final line from Emma Lazarus poem "The New Colossus", the ode to the freedom promised by immigration to America engraved on a bronze plaque mounted inside the statue at Liberty Island. Over the last few years, the heavily contested topic of immigration have sparked many heated, exhausting, and demoralizing political debates; this has raised the Statue of Liberty anew as a symbol of the openness of New York City and the United States to those seeking asylum, freedom, or simply a better life. Alan Louis Smith's song cycle "Vignettes: Ellis Island" forms the cornerstone of this recital which also includes works by Stephen Lias, H. Leslie Adams, Vernon Duke, Juliana Hall, and Kamala Sankaram.
