Deborah Karpel: The Midwood Miracle
A musical memoir written and performed by Deborah Karpel with Michael Lewis Smith, piano, Aimee Todoroff, director.
Singer-actress-writer Deborah Karpel's story follows her mothers upbringing as a Jewish girl in coal mining Appalachia, VA, her parent's romance at a Catskills socialist summer resort in the 1950s, growing up in 1970s suburbia, and the twists of fate that lead Deborah to the music of her grandfather. THE MIDWOOD MIRACLE features original musical collaborations with Elliot Sokolov and with Rachelle Garniez, original songs by Ms. Karpel as well as folksongs, Ernest Tubb, hymns, operatic arias, improvised art songs, and Yiddish songs.
Performer/Writer Deborah Karpel's favorite stage credits include originating the role of Sonny in Jeff Weiss Obie award-winning live serial, HOT KEYS; singing the role of Jill Johns in Yarmolinsky/Bernstein's opera BLIND WITNESS NEWS; and five formative years with Shock of the Funny, an improvisational theater group. She is a frequent recitalist at Lincoln Centers Bruno Walter Auditorium and performs with Ismail Butera and David Hofstra as THE EAST SIDE TRIO all over the greater New York area.

"Karpel's vocals boast a natural allure so hot it ought to be licensed, taxed and regulated." - Seth Rogovy, Author - The Essential Klezmer.
