The Lady Vanishes
In Alfred Hitchcock's most quick-witted and devilish comic thriller, the beautiful Margaret Lockwood, traveling across Europe by train, meets a charming spinster (Dame May Whitty), who then seems to disappear into thin air. The younger woman turns investigator and finds herself drawn into a complex web of mystery and high adventure. Also starring Michael Redgrave, The Lady Vanishes remains one of the great filmmaker's purest delights.
"Although film schools all teach a semester-long course on Alfred Hitchcock, they might as well just show 1938s THE LADY VANISHES on the first day of freshman year and tell the students he never got it quite as right again. In the directors penultimate UK feature, the plot is tight and the action is full of suspense, but it is the characters that keep us entertained throughout." - CineFile
"At the top of his form" - Time Magazine
"A Pleasure" - Guardian
"This is vintage Hitchcock, with the pacing and superb editing that marked not only his 30s style but eventually every film that had any aspirations whatever to achieving suspense and rhythm." - Chicago Reader
"Both a neat comment on Britain's dilemma in the build-up to the impending war with Germany (to appease or not to appease?) and also a cracking piece of entertainment." BBC
