On the Other Hand: Two True Musical Tales of Choice (Castlegar)

Kootenay performers Ellie Reynolds and Bessie Wapp have teamed up to present a double-bill of two remarkable solo performances titled On the Other Hand: two true musical tales of choice. Its a show that dwells at the nexus of memoir and musical theatre.

Reynolds and Wapp are now set to bring the show to a Procter/Harrop and area audience with their fall/winter tour, supported by the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance.

The first performance of the evening is the brand new, full length one-woman play Matchmaker on the Roof, written and performed by Ellie Reynolds. Its a true tale of bold love, border-crossing and the (re)discovery of Tradition. It also has a very local flavor, with many scenes taking place in the Nelson area. Adding a musical backbone to the show, Reynolds has used the themes and music from the well-loved Broadway Show Fiddler on the Roof to help tell her story of leaving home, finding a most unusual match and creating a family, as well as the challenges  both poignant and hilarious  that accompany this journey. This show was directed this summer by Bessie Wapp, who also plays the live piano accompaniment.

The second half of the evening features Bessie Wapps true tale Jesus Christ Superstore, a piece of storytelling that recounts a surreal weekend where birth control, a cinematic cult classic and the big-box phenomenon converge. This piece has been performed previously at the Oxygen Centre Cabaret, the Kootenay Storytelling Festival and at the Vallican Whole. Bessie Wapp has been working as a theatre-maker and musician professionally for over 30 years, both in the Kootenays, Vancouver and internationally.
