SANTA FE, NM For its second offering of the 2019 season (following Romeo and Juliet in the Garden), Santa Fe Classic Theater (SFCT) will prepare a special presentation of scenes and monologues from the great female characters created by Shakespeare. In an age when other playwrights wrote about women with contempt or chauvinist humor, if at all, Shakespeares heroines have, even in his own day, been acknowledged as the greatest female acting roles ever written. Why Seven Ages of (Wo)man? In the beloved comedy As You Like It (which SFCT will present at the Garden in 2020), the satirist, Jaques, has one of Shakespeares most famous speeches, beginning All the worlds a stage and all the men and women merely players. He then goes on to list the seven ages all men live through - from infant to schoolboy, lover to soldier, justice to pantaloon to mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
SFCT would like to take advantage of the abundance of female talent in Santa Fe and will turn the tables and explore the seven ages of Shakespeares women, from infant to girl-child to lover, wife, mother, soldier, judge, and crone; from Mistress Quickly the tavern mistress to Queen Cleopatra.
Some of Santa Fes best actresses will have the opportunity to share. Opening Sunday, November 17, the short run will continue November 18, 19 and 20 at the Santa Fe Playhouse.
Director Jennifer Graves
