Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Tales of Hoffmann)
One of the world's greatest operas, a one-of-a-kind work of fantasy and musical genius that has delighted audiences for generations. It is three stories in one, each in its own unique setting, all built around a search for love by a romantic poet.
Our hero Hoffmann first falls for Olympia who is a mechanical doll that he can view through a pair of scientifically-invented glasses that make the doll appear to be human. Others know better.
His second love is the beguiling Giulietta, who has been promised a diamond by the nefarious captain Dapertutto if she steals Hoffmann's reflection/soul in a mirror. She seduces him and it all ends very badly.
He tries for a third time with Antonia, a young woman sadly destined to die if she sings. She promises to keep silent but struggles to resist the entreaties of Doctor Miracle.
Returning to the tavern where his story telling began. Hoffmann falls unconscious from drinking too much and loses his last chance of love to his rival the Councillor Lindorff.
