BIG SHOT - a storytelling show about the famous people we've met
BIG SHOT is a new storytelling show that features regular people telling stories about their encounters with famous people. It's nothing like People magazine or Entertainment Tonight. It's not fluffy. OK, it's a little bit fluffy but mostly it's not. Cause these stories have substance. A formidable group of storytellers have been gathered to tell their stories.
* PAUL SUSSMAN "Listen Up, Jimmy Carter!"
There's no way he's coming by my office. But I'm ready for him. Pretending to work. Doodling. Running my lines, every word I'm going say, a mouthful of grenades to be tossed before his toadies and secret service goons can shut me up. That peanut-farmer grin, wiped off his face. But there's no way he's coming by MY office, right?
* JANET CHEATHAM BELL "In Contempt with Toni Morrison"
I actually connected with one of the women I most admire, but I was asking her to do something she'd sworn not to do! This happened before she won the Nobel Prize for Literature, or I wouldn't have had the nerve.
* CLARA KAMUNDE "No. You can't invite the Prince to your dorm for wine and cheese"
"Can you imagine peeing with your foot in that position?", he asked. My eye lids clapped open and shut trying to blink-erase the graphic cartoon HRH had seared onto my mental imagery. This was the second shocking thing he'd said to me, and added to my initial shock at my introduction to the heir to the British throne. I was feeling a little heady so I thought, "Fuck it, Ill ask him anyway."
* MARC HERSHON "How Time Travel Changed My Life"
Last week Marc was at his job in Seattle, scarfing down free nachos for dinner at the comedy club he managed and wondering how he was going to afford to pay his car repair bill. (The damn thing wouldnt go into reverse ever since he lent it to a pair of local standups so they could make a road gig across the state.) This week he was being ushered into a posh office at the top of the "Black Tower", the headquarters for Universal Studios, in Los Angeles, sitting shoulder to shoulder with a nationally known comedian he'd only recently met, pitching a movie idea to a studio executive for which they still didn't have an ending.
* CHARITY POMEROY "Trick or Treating with Barack and Michelle"
My friend and I made our way tentatively down the main corridor of the East Wing. It was completely silent the whole place seemed to have been cleared out. There wasn't another person in sight and we had no idea which way to go. We were lost inside the Whitehouse.
