The Seagull
The Seagull, the first of Anton Chekhovs four major plays, is set at a country estate, where a group of friends and relations have gathered to see the first performance of an experimental play, by the aspiring young writer, Konstantin. Acting in the play is the young and beautiful object of Konstantins affection, Nina. In the audience are Konstantins femme fatale mother, a celebrated actress, and her lover, the famous novelist Trigorin. The presence of such luminaries not only disrupts the performance, but ultimately the lives of everyone present. Through its exploration of the romantic and artistic conflicts of its four main characters, the play examines the unquenchable human desire to live and extraordinary life and suggests that the line between greatness and mediocrity is perilously thin.
