Letter from the Afterlife - Uptown
We are thrilled to be opening our 2019 - 2020 season with a fantastically diverse selection of music for the string quartet, representing something old (Mendlessohn), something new (Wijeratne), and something borrowed (Scandinavian Folk Tunes).
Sri Lankan-born Dinuk Wijeratne is one of the most exciting young Canadian composers of our time. He is a JUNO-award winning composer as well as a pianist and conductor. "Letter from the Afterlife" is the first part of his composition entitled "Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems" which the Ton Beau will perform in full.
Also on the program, the Ton Beau will perform a number of Scandinavian Folk Tunes that have been artfully arranged for the string quartet by the Danish String Quartet. These arrangements are truly phenomenal, adding energy, colour and nuance to these beautiful Nordic tunes.
Lastly, the Ton Beau will perform Felix Mandelssohn's final string quartet, Op. 80 in F minor. Written after his sister's sudden death, this masterpiece captures the roller-coaster of emotions the composer experienced in the aftermath of this tragedy.
Light snacks and beverages will be offered during intermission.
