Spin Cycle with Gina Sobels Gold Sounds
On Sunday November 3rd in UVAs Brooks Hall, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU present a rare double bill featuring Charlottesville flute sensation Gina Sobel, co-headlining with New York City favorite Spin Cycle.
Formed in 2014, Spin Cycle is a collaborative band that can be lighthearted, serious, funky or abstract but always with a groove and without musical boundaries. Comprised of co-leaders Tom Christensen (Tenor and Soprano Sax) and Scott Neumann (drums), along with guitarist Pete McCann and bassist Phil Palombi, Spin Cycle is a free-wheeling, roller coaster ride of a band, accentuating everybodys chops and arranging skills. The piano-less format allows the group to exhibit its funky chops and willingness to venture outside the box, while still making evocative, passionate music. A single song might contain influences from modal Coltrane, introspective free jazz, New Orleans funk or the raw energy of punk.
Gina Sobel has been a beloved fixture on the Charlottesville scene for many years. Recently she has chosen to travel the world, performing her music for new audiences and absorbing influences from others. Her signature instrument is the flute, but she is an accomplished singer, saxophonist and guitarist as well, whether playing folk, rock, funk or jazz. Her new group, Gold Sounds, will have its area premier at this concert. Inspired by her 2018 residency at Strathmore Music Center, the group has crafted a sound that makes use of Ginas multi-instrumental talents and her wide ranging musical interests. She and drummer Joey Antico, who brings a unique melodic flare to the drum kit, form the core of Gold Sounds. The ensemble is filled out by close collaborators from the Virginia and DC music scenes: Ian Dansey (guitar/pedal steel), Garen Dorsey (keys), and Matt Wood (bass).
