"Songs of Home"
Gioacchino Rossini: Barber of Seville Overture Sufjan Stevens: Selections from "Run Rabbit Run" Tunde Jegede: Lamentation Dmitri Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1 in E flat major
Nathan Chan, cello Geoffrey Larson, conductor
A famous celebration of drama, Rossinis Overture to The Barber of Seville fascinated Dmitri Shostakovich, whose fiery Cello Concerto No. 1 concludes SMCO's orchestral season. Folk music quotations in the concerto connect Shostakovich to his homeland in a more bittersweet way than one might think. SMCO also performs music of the American songsmith Sufjan Stevens, reimagining songs from "Enjoy Your Rabbit" for orchestra. Tunde Jegede's 21st century masterwork "Lamentation" sings the story of displaced African peoples, exploring the search for belonging of the African diaspora.
