Walt Whitman 200 Years: A Birthday Celebration
From the shores of Red Hook, Brooklyn saunters Walt Whitman, celebrating his 200th birthday! He invites all who wish to join him! The renowned poet of the body and the poet of the soul put his imprint on America with "Song of Myself" in 1855. It captures a particular voice, something generous and hopeful in the developing culture of the United States. In it, Whitman contends that we have more in common than separates us, that that common thing is nature - that the principle of nature is abundance and variety, that death is as much a part of life as birth and sexual desire - and that love and sympathy are among the deepest ways that the human imagination connects people to one another. It has been a long celebration. Whitman is tired and blue and bleary-eyed and it has becoming increasingly hard for him to source his joy. Can he find a way to laugh at the hilarity of the language in which human beings have both described and invented the world in which they find themselves living? Can Walt celebrate himself? Some music plays, he dances and opens up some birthday cards. He recites selections of his Song and bequeaths himself to the dirt.

Dillon Porter has been working on Whitman for a dozen years now. Last summer he appeared as Hamlet in Shakespeare in the Park in Port Townsend as well as wrote and performed "Dillon on Dylan" Most recently Dillon directed Midsummer Night's Dream at the House of Yes in Brooklyn.

Space permitting, no one will be turned away from the recitation for lack of payment.
