His People
A special film presentation featuring saxophonist/composer Paul Shapiros amazing musical score for the 1925 Yiddish silent picture His People, directed by Edward Sloman. The film tells the story of two sons of a poor Russian-Jewish pushcart peddler on New Yorks Lower East Side. Morris is a good student and the apple of his fathers eye, while Sammy is the black sheep of the family. But not all is as it seems. Sammy secretly becomes a boxer to pay for Morriss law school, while Morris rejects his poor, uneducated family. Will the father realize that Morris is a no-goodnik? Will he accept Sammy as a boxer with an eye for an Irish girl? Will the family stay together or be torn apart? Will Sammy be knocked out in the third round? Oy Gevalt! His People is accompanied by musician and composer Paul Shapiro and a live, six-piece jazz band with Shapiros original score originally commissioned by the Museum of Jewish Heritage.
