The state of California made a huge leap forward in its efforts to support the housing market when it approved legislation (SB1069, AB2406 and AB2299) that went into effect on January 1, 2017. These bills removed many of the hurdles preventing homeowners from building rentable granny flats on their single family residential lots.
Granny Flat is just one of several different names known as Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), as well as second dwelling, In-law suites, companion unit, etc. For the sake of this recent legislation, an ADU is a RENTABLE secondary dwelling unit with complete living facilities for one or more persons. It can be attached to the primary house, detached from the primary house, or even converted/repurposed space within the primary home.
At this meeting, Jared Basler will share information on the following topics concerning ADUs: - Recognize the impact of state legislation on the local built environment. - Identify the key requirements of California Government Code 65852.2. - Differentiate between local and state requirements for Accessory Dwelling Units. - Recognize how local ordinances impact housing affordability. - Identify methods employed by local jurisdictions to discourage the development of Accessory Dwelling Units.
