Orchestra of Objects - Musical Sculpture Workshop
This exciting workshop for parents and children mixes a fun music-making session using giant pentatonic percussion instruments with a chance to get busy with your own making skills and build large musical sculptures to play on. The session is split into two halves. The group is first introduced to an array of slightly strange but beautifully sounding, giant percussion instruments built from all kinds of recycled domestic and industrial parts. The group is taught fun theatrical ways to conduct and control the ensemble using physical gestures and hand signals to control the tempo and the dynamics of the sound.
The second half of the workshops involve using everyones construction skills to piece together colourful and robust sculptures using pre-drilled plastic piping. It fits together a bit like giant K-NEX with pre-made musical parts that can be connected in any combination resulting in some extraordinary and large sound sculptures.
The final part of the workshop involves using these new creations as an ensemble or in smaller groups and in combination with the pre-made instruments to have some fun and make a small impromptu performance to end the session.
