Annual Evening of Irish Music & Poetry
HoCoPoLitSos annual Irish Evening on February 21, 2020, will feature award-winning novelist Alice McDermott reading from her work followed by a concert of Irish music by O'Malley's March with dancers from the Teelin Irish Dance Company.
McDermott has published eight novels, all of which have received critical acclaim. Her first, That Night (1987) was a finalist for the National Book Award, the Pen/Faulkner Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. The next, At Weddings and Wakes (1992) was also Pulitzer Prize finalist. Charming Billy (1998) won both the American Book Award and the National Book Award. Child of My Heart : A Novel (2002), was nominated for the International Dublin Literary Award; After This (2006), was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and Someone (2013), was longlisted for the National Book Award.
The evening program begins at 7:30 p.m. Irish coffee, Guinness and other beverages and snacks will be offered for sale beginning at 7 p.m. and during intermission. Book sale and signing afterwards.
McDermott joins the long list of illustrious Irish authors HoCoPoLitSo has brought to local audiences, including Frank McCourt, Colm Tóibín, Anne Enright, Colum McCann, and Emma Donoghue. For more than 40 years, HoCoPoLitSos Irish Evening has celebrated the substantial impact of Irish-born writers on the world of contemporary literature.
