The Missouri Pacific with The Jakals (final show!)
The Missouri Pacific was started in 2018 by Lubomir Rzepka in Boston, Massachussets. A lover of poetry, novels, film, and theatre, Lubomir has been an avid participant in the world of storytelling for practically all of his life, and has been writing ever since he learned how to hold a pen. Lubomir studied English at the University of New Hampshire for a year before leaving to pursue music.
The Missouri Pacific was named after an old train-line often used by hitchhikers, artists, and fortune-seekers trying to make their way out West. Kerouac recounts it fondly in his novel On The Road, and the image of the railway harkens back to an era famous for its experimentation, surprise, and revolt in movements and music.
Much like the folks that used to hop the trains from way-back-when, The Missouri Pacific is a band of misfits who abandoned any semblance of regular American life in favor of the complete and utter chaos that is committing to the music you play so intensely and love so dearly.
The songs of The Missouri Pacific are eclectic: constantly evolving, pushing through genre and style. Though there is undoubtedly a theme, something that holds between songs, its difficult to place exactly what that is. The music is melodic, sincere, deeply lyrical and very deliberately trying to tell a story.
A Boston-based indie rock band, Jakals honest, wrenching vocals and untamed, 90s-stained instrumentals create a tempestuous sound that weds the contemplative with the cathartic. In 2018, Jakals released "Bat Brains," a six song EP and the follow up to their debut album, 2017's "Keep Mother Sane."
Since forming two years ago, Jakals has toured throughout the US and consistently plays shows across the Northeast, including at Great Scott, Arlene's Grocery, and The Monkey House. They have also played at venues including Martyrs' (Chicago), Kung Fu Necktie (Philadelphia), and Skully's (Columbus). The band has received airplay on WZLX 100.7's Boston Emissions and other notable stations, and has become a widely recognized presence in the Boston music scene. Sound of Boston has called Jakals "a coherent, moving local music force" and lauded the band's "refreshing, honest, relatable portrait[s] of anxiety and self-loathing." Jakals have also been featured in publications including Vanyaland and Allston Pudding, and won The Deli Magazine's Best Emerging Artist in New England competition.
Jakals are unrestrained, exploring the internal turmoil that results from the harrowing experience of human existence. With a sound at times vaguely reminiscent of PJ Harvey, Angel Olsen, and the Pixies, Jakals craft dynamic songs as complex as the emotions and personal struggles they grapple with. "The band fuses [frontwoman Katie] Solomons ever-aching vocals which have been rightfully compared to the likes of Kate Bush and Florence Welch with driving instrumentals" to create a sound "that echoes with pain" (Allston Pudding).
