The American Cinematheque and the American Legion are thrilled to co-present a special tribute to legendary director Philip Kaufman on Veterans Day at the newly renovated Legion Theater at Post 43, located at 2035 N. Highland Ave., just south of the Hollywood Bowl. The only Hollywood theatrical venue owned and operated by veterans, it features state-of-the-art projection and sound systems along with an iconic art-deco bar and downstairs game room, offering a historically convivial atmosphere. Parking is available for $10 in the Legion lot and free across Highland Avenue in the Hollywood Bowl lot.

The event will include a 40-minute conversation with the director moderated by film historian Alan K. Rode, followed by a screening of his 1983 masterpiece, THE RIGHT STUFF. Prior to the event, Mr. Kaufman will also participate in an exclusive meet-and-greet with VIP ticket-holders in one of Post 43s historical sitting rooms. A complimentary drink will be provided from the bar for all VIPs. Meet-and-greet does not include autographs.
Join us for this opportunity to enjoy the American Legions lavish new facilities, and pay tribute to one of the greatest American filmmakers!

About the film:
THE RIGHT STUFF, 1983, Warner Bros., 193 min. Dir. Philip Kaufman. Sam Shepard, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Quaid, Fred Ward and Jeff Goldblum head the stellar ensemble cast of THE RIGHT STUFF, which is based on Tom Wolfes best-selling book chronicling the exciting early years of the United States race to conquer the final frontier, and the daredevil test pilots who ultimately became the first Americans in space. Kaufman also wrote the screenplay for the film, which Pauline Kael of The New Yorker called astonishingly entertaining and great fun.
A pre-screening conversation with Philip Kaufman, moderated by film historian Alan K. Rode, begins at 7:00 PM.

About Philip Kaufman:
Since his debut in 1965 with the counter-culture comedy GOLDSTEIN, Chicago-born writer-director Philip Kaufman has forged an impressive career as "the thinking persons filmmaker" with such films as THE GREAT NORTHFIELD MINNESOTA RAID, WHITE DAWN, THE WANDERERS, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING and THE RIGHT STUFF. Encouraged to follow his filmmaking dreams by writers/mentors Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin, Kaufman is best known for bringing seemingly impossible-to-adapt literary works to the screen, as well as for his compelling story ideas for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and other box-office hits. As a director, Kaufman has managed to consistently balance sensitivity and intelligence with style and pure cinematic pleasure, while working in (and re-working) an ever-increasing variety of genres  including sci-fi, western, action-adventure, romance, drama and more.
