Wells has a gift for melody, and for encompassing the ways and means by which so many of us try to make ends meet in his lyrics. - Rolling Stone
That melody, those lyrics, and trying to make ends meet started with the Lexington, KY based band Fifth on the Floor. The band was a sonic whirlwind, mixing rock with country in a way far removed from that umbrella term Southern Rock. Wells, as frontman and songwriter, lead the band through the drudges of independent albums and touring, along the way playing clubs shows or touring with Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, Blackberry Smoke, Jamey Johnson, Lucero, George Thorogood, and more. Fifth on the Floors work culminated in the 2013 release Ashes & Angels, produced by Shooter Jennings (Shooters first production credit for another artist. Those credits now include Brandi Carlile, Duff McKagan, and Marilyn Manson). The album reached #64 on Billboards Hot Country charts. In 2015, the band dissolved, playing a pair of high-profile Lexington farewell shows (with notable opener Tyler Childers), having foreshadowed a Kentucky music outpouring.
That dissolution, a result of never quite making those ends meet, was at the forefront of Wells mind when writing his fifth album and first solo outing, 2016s Dawn in the Distance. Produced by Duane Lundy (Ringo Starr, Sturgill Simpsons Sunday Valley, Joe Pug), Dawn in the Distance pushed lyric and melody to the forefront. The album was an ode to Wells former band, opening with the line I thought I did good, but you be the judge, before then exploring the ups and downs of touring (The Dogs, the poignant Dire Straits cover So Far Away), and, ultimately, culminating in the twin love letters to his family (Been a Long Time, Little Darlins). The album reached #3 on Amazons Best Sellers in Alt-Country/Americana. The song Going Down Grinnin was featured as an iTunes Hot Track, while The Dogs won the Song of the Year accolade from esteemed country music website Saving Country Music, who said There is no vessel, container, or recording device that can capture human struggle like a song can. Justin Wells proves this.
For his second solo record, Wells again returned to the studio with Duane Lundy. The songs were large, the goal was the moon, and the players were top tier.
Borne from the idea of the shared but singular human experience, the album uses colors from much of American music to paint a life, from before birth to after death. The scope is reflected in its ensemble: brothers Daxx (Cheap Trick) and Miles Nielsen (Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts), Laur Joamets (Sturgill Simpson, Drivin and Cryin), Alex Munoz (Margo Price, Nikki Lane), Justin Craig (Broadway presentations Hedwig and the Angry Itch, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, HBOs Vinyl), with the aforementioned Rusted Hearts on backing vocals.
The album is coming soon.
Its called The United State.
Adam Lee Artist: adamleeband.com Spotify: spoti.fi/2naSFDk FB: facebook.com/adamleeband
Adam Lees first solo release, 'Sincerely, Me', turned traditionalism on its head. In support of the album he completed a second European tour and played shows with Dave Alvin, Lucero, and Frank Turner. He also dug deeper into his own roots: from Springsteen and Petty to the indie and punk rock records he grew up on.
Adam previously fronted the scrappy alt-country outfit Adam Lee & the Dead Horse Sound Company. Their time was spent in the remaining American honky tonks, time which eventually paid off: he was nominated for Dale Watsons Ameripolitan Awards and had his songs land in the Kevin Smith films Red State and Tusk. Following these successes, Adam accepted an offer for a leading role in the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet, under the musical direction of Chuck Mead.
Adam Lee's life is movement. As a military kid, Adam called many different places home. His music does the same. Sincerely, Me reflects all of this. Roots-rock songwriter Justin Wells sums it up: Somebodys gonna file this album under Americana, but that's because Adam Lee isn't a genre...the record nods at several American musics without knowing the meaning of derivative.
Adam is currently recording the follow-up to his solo debut with producer Duane Lundy (Ringo Starr, Horse Feathers, Joe Pug).
